How to Clean Aluminum

How to Clean Aluminum

There is no shortage of uses for aluminum. From decorative art to patio furniture and commercial use, aluminum is a flexible metal seen both indoors and outdoors. With time, however, grime and residue build up on the metal, taking away from its natural shine. It might be surprising to hear that every day ingredients could quickly restore that spotless look to your aluminum. Tampa Steel & Supply is here with three simple ways to clean your aluminum and get surfaces shiny again.

3 Ways to Clean Aluminum

1. Vinegar

Vinegar is an effective resource to clean aluminum. Mix one part white vinegar with one part water to create an acidic solution. The solution can then be used in different ways depending on the object being cleaned. To clean and shine an exterior, dip a cloth into the mixture and scrub the object clean. For aluminum cookware, such as pots, additional steps could prove helpful. To loosen the residue, first boil the water for the solution before adding the vinegar. Pour the hot solution into the pot, just enough to cover the residue, and allow it to work for about 30 minutes before cleaning it off with a sponge or cloth.

2. Mild Detergent

A universal cleaning option for most aluminum forms is a mixture of mild detergent and water. Add a small amount of mild detergent, such as a dish detergent, to some warm water, and apply throughout. It is generally better to apply using a non-abrasive sponge or soft cloth as aluminum can scratch easily during the cleaning process. Rinse well. Because of its flexibility, this particular method is great for cleaning aluminum furniture and other objects too large to move.

3. Borax

Borax is another alternative and is found in the laundry aisle of a supermarket. It can be sprinkled onto the object and then, using a sponge or cloth, can be scrubbed and rinsed until shiny. Borax, when combined with a small amount of water, forms a light paste that is excellent for loosening residue and cleaning well. Apply the paste to the problem area, and use an old toothbrush to scrub off the residue. Rinse well, and dry for a shiny result.
