While we all know steel for its durability, we also know the possibility of it denting when enough force is used. Fortunately, there’s a simple way to repair a steel door dent as if it were never there. Just follow these simple steps:
Materials
Before you get started, you’re going to need a few tools and materials. Be prepared by gathering these items:
- Drill
- Wire wheel
- Putty knives (plastic and metal)
- Sanding block and 100-grit sandpaper
- Paintbrush and paint
- Metal Primer
- Plastic gloves
- Auto body filler
Directions
Step 1. Sand Down the Damaged Area
You can repair a dent with the door in place, but it’s usually easier to have it lying flat. Either way, start by sanding away paint from the dented area and a few inches around it. You can use 60- or 80-grit sandpaper, but the job will be easiest with an electric sander or a small wire wheel in a drill.
Step 2. Fill Dent With Auto Body Filler
Use auto body filler that you would use to repair a dent on your car. Follow the directions that come with the filler to mix it. It’s very important that the resin and hardener are thoroughly mixed together.
To apply the filler, use a metal putty knife that is wider than the dent. The filler will harden fast, so you only have a few minutes to work. Fill the dent and lightly coat the surrounding area to create a smooth look. Try not to overfill the dent. If there are imperfections once the filler hardens, adding another coat on top will usually be easier than trying to sand out the bumps.
Step 3. Sand Door Again and Paint
Wait about 30 minutes for the filler to harden completely. Sand it smooth with 100-grit sandpaper and prime the surface with a metal primer. You can repaint the repaired area only, but unless you’ve recently painted the door, the color probably won’t be an exact match. Because of this, it may be best to repaint the entire door.
By now, your door should look as good as new and maybe even better than ever if you added a fresh coat of paint.
