Welding Tips and Tricks

Welding Tips and Tricks

We at Tampa Steel and Supply know how difficult it can be when first starting out with welding. Rather than going at it alone, let us show you some of our favorite tips for those new to the craft of welding.

7 Welding Tips and Tricks for Beginners

1. Stay Positive

First, don’t get discouraged if your work isn’t its best yet. Like all crafts, becoming a skilled and masterful welder takes time, patience, and experience (and lots of trial and error).

2. Be Safe

Don’t overlook safety! While you may have graduated from a great welding program and feel confident you know all the ins and outs of welding, even the most professional welders make mistakes.

3. Use an Argon Shielding Gas

Use argon as a shielding gas when working with a non-ferrous metal, such as aluminum, magnesium, or titanium. Argon creates a narrower penetration profile–useful for fillet and butt welding projects.

4. Keep the Gun Straight

Always keep your gun pointed as straight as you possibly can while welding to avoid the improper feeding of wire.

5. Maintain Control

Keep the wire directed toward the leading edge of the weld pool in order to maintain the most control over your welding bead.

6. Use Both Hands

Using both hands while welding helps you keep steadier guns.

7. Don’t Get Discouraged

If your electrode sticks to the metal, don’t get discouraged. This happens in the beginning and you will eventually pick it up. Check to see that your amperage is at the proper level.
